He's getting a bit grey, but is as bouncy as he ever was 10 years ago. I switched my mini-Schnauzers over to Newman's Own Organics a month ago when they came off of their puppy chow. I have been feeding this to my Standard Poodle for quite some time. It was recommended by a local dog day care/grooming/training center called Great Dog Shoppe in Seattle.
I have no idea what they put in it that tasted so good; it's like the crack cocaine of dog food. She has never been a finicky eater, she'll pretty much eat anything voraciously, but this stuff really rocked her epicurean world. I will never purchase this brand again and am switching my dog immediately back to Blue Buffalo- this time no mixing! My dogs have been eating Canidae for years.
I bought two bags, this formula for my old, 140 pound dog, and lamb meal and rice for my 1 year old. They had loose stools the entire time. He is more active and seems healthier and happier. No more rendering plant floor sweepings for my dog! I tried another bag last week-- same results. Other dog owners/breeders/vets/handlers have also reported problems with Canidae foods over the past few months.
My doggie loves it a lot, my budget howls though. I can't find it steadily at the local stores so catching it on sale is out of the question. As I had 1 full bag of old formula left, I followed the instructions and guess what, no issues whatsoever with the transition. My dog did NOT get sick at all and has not had a single problem with this food new or old formula.
I have to say that my black lab mix has an even brighter coat than before. I love that they came out with a 44# bag. But, I would have rather they raised the prices rather than switch ingredients without warning. Now, I've got to go hunt for another brand that is good for my dogs, and not part of the original recall. I still use kibble because it's the fastest way to feed them a meal first thing in the morning before I let them out to go potty. So gross, but that's why we covered our couches in blankets that were easily washed.
They clearly have a dangerous quality control problem. I tried many different types of dry food for my picky eater, a cavalier King Charles spaniel. We have a pug that suffers from chronic ear infections and skin problems. We've consistently kept him on expensive brands that are well known for having good ingredients like California Natural, Chicken Soup for the dog lover's soul, Royal Canine, and a couple others that I can't remember off the top of my head.
Regarding the comments left here regarding Newman's Own and the FDA, I found no references to this at all at the FDA website, and I wasn't aware the FDA operated as a testing service for individuals. Sounds like a tall tale to me.
