The Benefits Of Cat Scratch Posts

By Roxanne House

Having a feline poses its own set of complications their needs are much different from those of a canine. Cat owners face special problems including the claws which their frisky companion is all too happy to use on anything that is available. Cat scratch posts offer an alternative to problems developing.

In the wild a feline would have the opportunity to use their claws on whatever surface was appealing to them. Unfortunately, domestic cats still have this strong desire but the furniture, carpeting, and door frames bear the brunt of this behavior. While there are ways to limit the amount of damage caused by clawing, it is not always accomplished.

Declawing has become a popular way to permanently handle the problem of claws. This is not always a method which is accepted due to the debate of being humane. Another reason that this procedure is not done is that people will allow their cat to roam outside and declawing would leave them totally defenseless.

The behavior of clawing is instinctual, and it is better to find a way to work around the issue rather than try to stop it. Kitty furniture like a condo or post can satisfy may different needs of a house feline. Many different designs, sizes, and colors are available, which cover a wide range of prices.

Most cats will immediately take to the use of their furniture. To encourage its use, a cat can be shown gently to use it for scratching. Attaching fun toys or rubbing catnip into the material are also great ways to encourage its use.

Cat scratch posts are an excellent way to save your furniture and maintain the sanity of you and your feline. A cat owner does best when they learn to adapt to the needs of their furry companion rather than try to fight it. These can be a simple straight 4X4 with carpet or rope wrapped around it, to a more natural tree branch, or a large tree with cubbies. cat scratch posts
