All You Need to Know About Puppy Training

By Dirk Gruenberg

If you own a dog, you will not really get around training him. This is truly important, because having a well-behaved dog means that you can trust him and he will also trust you.

This, in turn, means that both of you, you and your dog, will be much more free - and home as well as outdoors.

Now, there are a few commands that every dog should be able to obey. You might want to start with simple ones such as sit, stay, down, and heel. When teaching him these, always rely on positive reinforcement.

Small treats are a good reward to give to your pet when he complies with the command given. It is not good to yell or hit the dog when it does not follow the command. This may scare the dog and only lead to more negative behavior.

If you are trying to train your canine to stop his excessive barking, the first thing that you should do is find out why he his displaying this behavior to begin with. Dogs bark for many reasons, and many of them are instinctual.

For example, the dog might perceive himself to be in danger. Or he might simply want attention. If the latter is the case, certainly do not reward him for barking excessively. That is, do not pay extra attention to him and do not give him treats.

Once you make sure there is no threat, ignore your dog's barking. Only give him attention when he stops displaying this behavior. If you give him a treat right after he starts barking, he will keep barking for more.

Additionally, leash training is important to teach your pet. They should not tug or pull on the leash nor should they walk in front of you.

The leash should stay slack and they should walk behind you or at your side. Not only will this save your arms some strain, it is a safer way for you and your pet to enjoy your walks.
