It is certainly not a surprise for you to hear that dogs are loyal and intelligent companions. Almost everybody who ever had a dog considered his pet to be his best friend. Not only are dogs loyal but they also provide us joy and happiness.
Some puppy training will make your life and your dog's life much easier. It is recommended to start with basic obedience training. But what are the individual steps and in which order should you teach the commands to your dog?
"Sit" is the first command you should teach your dog. There are a lot of situations where it is absolutely essential that your dog follows this command. Make sure you have always some treats at hand to reward your puppy when he did what you expected him to do.
Your puppy wants you to be happy with what he does and a treat shows him exactly that. As time goes by it will be sufficient to only praise him. A treat will then not be necessary anymore. If this is the case, move on to teach him "stay".
The "Stay" command reinforces the "sit" command and should be taught as command no. 2. Do so as soon as your puppy knows "sit".
What is the difference between "stay" and "sit"? Using the "stay" command properly you can walk away for a short period of time and make your dog wait for you until you come back.
The "lie down" command goes even one step further. This is why you want to teach this command as the next. You first ask your dog to "sit", then to "stay".
Have a treat ready, which you now move close to the floor. Your dog's instincts make him move towards the treat, and he will eventually lie down. Give him the treat now. And don't forget: Repetition is the mother of all skills.
Practice these commands approximately 15 minutes per day. This should be sufficient for your dog to learn them and not to forget them anymore. When your puppy knows the basics you can move onto further commands.
