Labs - The Ideal Breed For Drug Detection

Lou is the most recent member to sign up with the Summit County drug unit. The county Sheriff's Office swore in the Labrador retriever recently as a replacement for Coco, a soon to retire canine member. A detection dog or sniffer dog such as Lou is certainly an important asset to the drug unit due to its great sense of smell that allows it to detect illegal drugs immediately and with the very least disruption to the public. As stated in this News Leader report, Lou is going to be trained thoroughly by his handler making sure that he can undertake the duties that his predecessor was accomplishing for the Sheriff's office.

Lou has been bought from a Western Reserve area dog breeder with funds contributed by an Akron lawyer that requested that he be named after his brother. The Sheriff's Office paid $2000 for him given that he was an inexperienced puppy. A totally skilled dog may very well be priced upwards of $5000, say sources in the Sheriff's office. Detective Keith Gowens shall be Lou's handler and the dog is going to be staying with the Gowens family. This will help significantly if evidence exposed by Lou must be introduced in court during any trial. Together with his training Lou will also be taken out in the field by Gowens when he is working.

Summit County's K9 Squad

Summit County Sheriff's Office has four deputies employed here full time in addition to several canines. The dogs are coached in bomb detection, tracking and also officer protection along with drug detection. Every canine is recognized as a valuable member of the force here and is treated as the handling officer's partner. Specially outfitted patrol cars let the canines to do the rounds together with their human partners when on the job.
