How to Remove Pet Stains From Your Area Rug

By Mike Botkanson

Area rugs are great to have around the house. They can add beauty and personality to a room and can change the whole feel of the house. Unfortunately, rugs can also be quite difficult to keep clean. There are a number of potential hazards that rugs have to face on a daily basis. One of these is pets. Yes, pets are awesome. They provide companionship and security. But they can also leave your rugs dirty and soiled.

Area rugs can get pricey and should be considered an investment that requires proper care and maintenance. This is why trying to keep them free from pet stains is vital to every rug owner with pets. The following is a guide that you may find useful for eliminating those pesky pet stains from your favorite area rugs.

The first thing that you need to remember is that the earlier you get to a pet accident, the better chance you have of getting it completely out. If you see your pet urinate on the rug, get to it immediately. Don't let the stain set because it will only become harder to remove.

Use a clean cloth or some paper towels to absorb as much of the fluid as you can. Always make sure not to rub at the spot because this will only drive the liquid even further into your rug. Simply apply the towels over the area and apply light pressure. You might want to place something on top of the towels and step away for several minutes.

After you have eliminated as much of the substance as possible, get a rug cleaning solution to use on the remainder of the stain. There are many retail products to choose from however, if you want to save cash there are also household products you can use, such as vinegar or detergent. For the vinegar, combine one cup of it with a cup of water and pour the mixture in a spray bottle. For detergents, mix a teaspoon of non-bleach detergent with a cup of water and put that in a spray bottle. Squirt the solution on the stained area of the rug and blot with a clean white towel. Repeat this step until you have completely eliminated the stain.

The last stage in cleaning pet stains from your rug is to remove the excess water and cleaning agent. Rinse the area with water and then use a clean towel to dry it up. You can also use a wet/dry vac to help you remove the excess liquid.

Removing pet stains from area rugs is one challenge that you shouldn't worry about anymore. Simply proceed with the guidelines mentioned above and you're certain to take out those nasty pet stains in no time.
