What Games Can I Play With My Dog?

By Dirk Gruenberg

What is the main reason for most dog owners to have a dog? They want to have fun with their companion, of course. So what games can you play?

Thinking about this question is certainly worthwhile. Dogs love to play with their masters and we should give them every opportunity to do so.

Our dog thoroughly enjoys playing with his owner. Dogs love this kind of interaction and they can feel it when you as the master enjoy playing with them, too. You being happy with him is the biggest reward for your dog.

Furthermore you will find out that playing games with your dog creates mutual trust and deeper bonding. This alone is fun but there is something else to it. It makes it so much easier when it comes to train your dog.

What most likely will happen is that he will listen to you much better. What a great opportunity it is to not only have fun with your dog, spend great time together and in addition to it benefit in other areas of your life with your dog. So now: What games can you play with your pet?

Dogs like tug games. You can buy tug toys in a pet shop but easily you can use a branch or any other wooden stick as well. But be careful: Pull gently instead of pulling too hard in order not to damage your dog's teeth, mouth or muscles. And do not use items you don't want to be damaged during the game like clothes or shoes.

Ball games are also very popular. You could throw a ball and your dog is chasing it and brings it back to you. Your dog will love it.

The next option is hide and seek games. This is how it works: Make your dog sit and have another person stand in front of him so he cannot see you. In the meantime you hide behind a tree or any other obstacle.

Call him then and let him find you. And of course praise him enthusiastically as soon as he has found you.
