How to Remove Skunk Smell from Dogs

By Dirk Gruenberg

When you have a dog a lot of things can go wrong. He might have accidents in the house or he might break things. But all this seems like nothing compared to him being hit by a skunk.

If you have ever experienced this or know someone who has, I am sure you will agree. And for those lucky folks who have never had their dog hit by a skunk, I am sorry, but it is hard to describe the intensity of the disgusting smell. It doesn't compare to anything.

Just imagine the grossest smell you have ever smelled and imagine it being everywhere you turn. It kind of feels like that. Which immediately leads to the question: what can you do?

Okay, so to start off with, do not let your dog back into the house. I promise you, if you do, you will more than regret it. It really is that bad.

Alright, so don't let him inside... because his smell would permeate everything immediately, and it would stay longer than you can imagine. It would just linger and linger.

Alright: So instead of doing that to yourself, keep him outside, get a pair of rubber gloves, and start wiping your dog off with paper towels.

This will take care of the smell a little bit. After that, use commercial products that are available from vet stores. You should always have some of them at home; after all, you never know when your dog might get hit.

If you are unsure about which anti-skunk product is best, just ask an employee. But, generally speaking, just about any such product should be alright. Then make sure to apply a fair amount of it to your dog.

Of course, there are also many home remedies that can work. However, I would suggest you ask your vet for his opinion on those before applying anything to your dog - often it is a mixture of water and baking soda and some other ingredient.
