Recommendations For Bringing Your Kitten Home

By Robert Baker

You have gotten a new kitten. Before you bring her into the house, there are some things you should consider. It is important to be prepared for bringing your kitten home.

It is a good idea to keep a new pet separated from any other pets for the first day or so. If you have other pets, keep them in a different part of the house where they are separated from her by a door. They will gradually get to know each other by sniffing through the door. Then set up a non-threatening and fairly brief supervised visit. Everyone should eventually get accustomed to each other and the old ones will take the baby under their wing.

If this is the first cat you have had, you will need a litter box, litter and a scoop. When you get her settled, put her in the box to familiarize herself. She investigate, play a bit, maybe even try eating some of the litter. If you scoop out the soiled litter each day, she will use the box. Cats are naturally clean creatures and do not need to be trained. They do insist though that their box be kept clean.

While getting the litter box, pick up two food bowls and a water dish. Most people feed kittens a combination of canned food and an age-appropriate dry food. She should always have fresh water available.

A good pet store can recommend a good cat bed and scratching post. Both are essential to making the kitten feel at home in her new surroundings. Scratching posts fulfill the need for sharpening claws and may eliminate any scratch marks on household furniture.

Last, make sure to get her a good variety of toys to play with. Kittens love to play. They can be entertained for hours by a cloth mouse or even a long feather. They are lots of fun to watch as they play. Later, when she grows up, she'll love getting catnip toys. Catnip is a favorite with adult cats, they really enjoy it.
