Factors in Choosing the Right Dog Glucosamine

By Brian McIntosh

Arthritis is not only a condition that humans suffer from. Dogs can also be victims of this disease. Luckily, there may be a remedy to control the symptoms and progression of arthritis. It's called glucosamine. All kinds of glucosamine are formulated to alleviate the stiffness and joint pains caused by arthritis. However, three particular options are picked from when it comes to choosing the best glucosamine for dogs. These options have their own share of pros and cons that you might want to look into.

When choosing the glucosamine for dogs, you should have an idea of what features are the most important to you. Things to consider are cost of the supplement, how quickly and well the supplement works, how easy it is to administer to your dog and how easy it is to acquire the supplement. These are all aspects to look for when choosing the supplement that works best for you and your dog.

Now back to the different options. An injection is one of the options. The best thing about using an injection is that the medicine will go right to the bloodstream upon injecting the medicine. This means that it will work fast. Some negative aspects of using the injection is that some dogs may feel pain and this is because the medicine is injected right into the dog's muscle. A veterinarian has to administrate the medicine too, and this can be an inconvenience for some people. Some vets will administrate the injections and this means that a person will have to bring in their dog each time an injection is needed.

The second option is to purchase the supplement in pill form. Some good things to consider about the pill form are that you can purchase them without visiting a veterinarian, and they do not cause pain to your dog. One negative aspect of the pills is that it can sometimes be hard to administer them to animals. Another potential problem is that some of the supplements in pill form do not contain the recommended daily dosage. This means that you may have to administer more than one pill every day to reach the recommended daily dosage.

Liquid glucosamine is the final form that you might want to consider. The glucosamine formula is water soluble and is mixed together with the drinking water of your dog. It may also be mixed into your dog's food. Apart from the ease of administration, the good thing about this is that the supplement has no taste. Your dog will not notice any difference and will not resist the medication. This particular supplement is affordable and requires no visit to the veterinarian. This particular form has an intermediate onset of action and works faster than the pill but slower than the injectable.

All three options have positive features to them. A person can keep these features in mind when they are looking for glucosamine for their dog. If a person wants something that works fast, then the injection is the way to go. If they want something that is easy for dogs to take, then liquid form is the best. It really depends on what features are the most important to a person.
