This is why you can find dog foods that are specially designed for puppies and adult ones. Puppy food is best for your pet until he's around 9 months old. Generally speaking, you should give adult food to your dog as he grows older so you can provide him the nutrients essential for his changing dietary needs. The quality of the ingredients in dog foods should also be considered. You should look into the ingredients list indicated in animal food packets to determine the specific type of meat ingredient used. As the choices available may surely be confusing, asking the advice of your vet on what type will be ideal can surely be of great help.

The ingredients' quality must also be taken into account. Checking the ingredients list provided on the back of food packets is necessary to determine the particular types of meat or ingredients used. Again, getting the advice of your vet will surely be of great help to know the particular type of food ideal for your pet. On the same note, you should also look for animal byproducts in the ingredients. When searching for cheap dog food online, always remember to check if the item is labeled natural or organic. In line with this, you should also consider your pet's health when giving him food. Naturally, the food you give him must not trigger any allergic reaction. You usually have to do some trial and error to find out if your dog is allergic to something. When giving food to your pet, take note of the ingredients included and observe for any allergic reactions. The Best Dog Training Collar in the World

By Colin Seal

Numerous models of Dog training collar have been designed, thanks to technology and creativeness. The difficulty with so many colors to make a choice from being that it becomes quite bewildering as to which device will offer the most benefits for you and also your dog.

Citronella Collars and other Models

In actual fact the collar has a large amount of purposes except for coaching and this can be for identification or display. Spray or citronella collars are fast becoming the choice of dog keepers more than the electrical collars. The citronella device squirts off an odour like lemon grass which dogs aren't fond of. Another assortment of dog training collars discharges a mild static pulse or shrill sound that may make your dog obey specific commands or prevent it from going out of the yard.

The issue here is that more owners are turning away from dislike training.

For those who aren't conversant with this strategy, dislike or avoidance mixes negative experience with a particular action that you don't desire your dog to perform. This technique relies on the parts of surprise and terror like use of slight stimutants.

Positive Reinforcement is the New Trend

Yes, hatred training is continuing to be used but the positive strengthening system is proven to be accepted more by both people and animals. Experts at canine training say that positive beefing up is working better than punishing the dog, which is believed to be inhumane by a lot of people.

It works by employing praises, positive actions and rewards instead of punishment or corrections to teach the dog what is right and what's wrong. The theory behind this training is to find out things that motivate the dog. This motivation will be employed in coaching as a reward for impressive performance. In positive reinforcement you can use toys, physical praise, verbal tribute or a mixture of all these to fix any kind of misbehaviour. It's a good complement for dog obedience training collars.

Each dog has a different personality and each owner also has different capabilities - so the right strategy, positive beefing up or the employment of a more intrusive training methodology may be considered.

In looking for the right collar for your pets, the things which you need to consider are safety, the training method and your convenience. If you are still uncertain about the collar for your pet, it's going to be better to consult dog trainers who've intensive experience regarding these matters. With the right canine training collars, you will not find it hard to handle all the challenges posed by dog training.

Thoughts About Quality Cat Furniture

By Robert Baker

It can be made out of a variety of materials. Something that can be scratched over and over without completely eroding it is best. Quality cat furniture can come in almost any shape or size, depending on the kitty and his or her owner's desires.

Except during the night, when they seem the most playful, cats are heavy nappers. Find the sunniest spot in the house, and there you will likely find your kitty either curled up in a ball or stretched out in full body lounge mode, soaking in the warmth. Consider a design that can withstand the sun without fading it. Cats are adaptable and can sleep almost anywhere, but my bet is they prefer something soft and comfortable. A fuzzy blanket type material would be nice. Or something smooth that won't be so hard to keep free of the cat hair might be preferable.

Cats love to pounce and chase and flail at almost anything that moves within their range of vision. So think about incorporating that into his or her furniture. Affix a bendable plastic stick with a small toy attached to the end, for example. Just make sure it's not something that can be torn off easily.

A multi-storied structure would satisfy your cat's love of climbing. Maybe an enclosed area would be good, so he or she can hide. A level for sleeping would be great. And of course the scratching and climbing element is key. It can be designed is any number of ways.

Depending on the cat's owners, the color scheme might make a difference. The structure, if it's kept inside the house, would be best to blend in nicely with the rest of the home's decor. So a changeable choice of fabrics would make the piece adapt to a variety of settings. The flexibility would also make it appealing to people who like to remodel and redesign their space more often.

You have many choices when it comes to quality cat furniture. Look online or head over to your local pet shop. If you don't find the piece that suits you and your cat's needs you might even consider building your own.

How To Train Dogs And Love Them

By Marcos Hickman

Remember that sometimes patience is key, don't become frustrated if your dog doesn't catch on right away. It would be nice if every dog could understand your every command but you have to remember they can't. Just try and be sure you are aware of your dog's emotions and when they do follow your command reward them so they know what they did was right.

Enforce the commands that you give your dog. Do not let up until they complete the task you have asked them to do. If you are not serious about making them do what you have commanded, then they will learn that they don't have to do it. Follow through is key to training.

If possible, position your dog's crate next to your bed. This is a critical step in teaching him that is where you want him to sleep. Since you are still within sight he isn't as likely to panic about having to stay in the crate for an extended period of time.

When trying to train your dog, avoid accidentally reinforcing negative behaviors. This means that you should never reward your dog, with treats or attention, for doing something you're trying to train it out of. For example, don't rub your dog's head when they jump up at you and when you come in the door if you don't want them to jump.

If you are working on crate training your indoor puppy or dog, you can always try a few tricks. If they are hesitant about the crate, you can put a nice chew bone inside and shut the gate while they are not in it. They will see and smell the bone and will want you to let them in there to get it. Once they go in the crate, praise them so that they know they did well.

When you are training your dog and establishing your leadership role, do not be adverse to letting the dog lick you on the face. This is common behavior in dogs when dealing with the Alpha in the pack. Do not discourage this behavior as it can confuse the animal and confuse your role because you do not show proper response to this servile behavior.

Dogs need a well fitting collar and lead if they are to be properly trained. Don't choose these items because they are cute or because they have rhinestones on them. Choose your dog's collar and lead based on the service you desire from them. Ask yourself if a halter might be more appropriate for your particular dog. Do they need a long lead or would a shorter one be better? Make the right choices, and your dog will benefit.

When you first bring your puppy home, those first few days are the most important. You should be patient, consistent, and persistent form day one with your new puppy. Be sure not to let your puppy get away with behaviors you are not going to allow and positively reinforce the behaviors you are wanting to see.

Dog Training Made Simple

By Aubrey Floyd

Throughout your dog's training program, continue to play with them as much as possible. Interacting through games and activities is one way to bond with your pet and relieve stress. Dogs respond much better to people they trust, so go out and throw a ball, play tug of war or just rub their belly.

Crate training is a good skill for a dog of any age to have. Teaching your dog to stay in their crate quietly takes time and patience but can be a valuable tool while potty training or a safe place for him to stay while you are away from the house.

When you are first starting out in training your dog, try to schedule the training sessions to take place at about the same time every day. If you are making the training sessions a positive experience and doing them on a schedule, your dog will start to look forward to the sessions and enjoy them more.

You should train your dog to walk properly on his leash. This will ensure both his safety and yours when you take him on walks. Your dog should know not to pull on the leash and to always heel at your side, which will help keep him out of harm's way, especially in areas with large amounts of traffic or other dangers.

If you cannot calmly work with your pet, it is best to put training aside until you have composed your mood. Your dog does not understand bad moods. Confusion can set in with your dog if you become frustrated in trying to work on basics. Patience and kindness are key factors in a dominant leader.

If your dog does not seem to be responding to your training, make an appointment with your vet. If your dog is not learning properly, it does not mean they are dumb. Sometimes physical and occasionally mental maladies could cause your dog to not respond properly to training. Your vet may be able to give you some indication to the problem.

Digging can be a troublesome behavior with some dogs. One way to address this is to create an area where your dog is allowed to dig. Hide some of his favorite toys in the area, bury dog treats, and encourage him to spend time there. This can keep your dog out of your favorite garden and help him to enjoy your yard.

Negative methods of training your dog don't work. Just as with humans, positive reinforcement of behaviors is much more effective. Use praise, treats and play time to show your dog that you are pleased with their performance. If he cannot do what you are asking him, do not punish him or yell at him. He will associate trying to do the task with negativity and will avoid the task even harder the next time.

Solving Dog Issues

By Colin Seal

Canine training collars were conceived by practical minds. It could be complicated for dog keepers to control unpleasant dog behaviour. You can only achieve this with suitable training systems and tools like anti-barking collars.

Digging and Barking

2 of the most typical and troublesome deeds of dogs are too much barking and digging. There's routinely a sound reason why dogs dig in the front or back yards. One is to bury food that it will make efforts to recover later . Another possibility is to build an underground shelter to keep hot especially in the cold season or cool in the summer.

The third reason is to look for possible quarry like small insects. It may even dig a hole for urinating or expelling waste. The problem is in the procedure of digging; your pets tend to destroy plants or landscaped gardens. The dog may even try and dig inside your place. Forestalling this peculiar behavior comprises you to train your pet through physical practices. Dog training collars will also come in handy to make it subservient to your commands.

Too much barking can cause you a lot of stress. It might also injure your relationships with your neighbors. You must understand the motive of your pet in barking. The dog barks intolerably to draw your attention and those of other human beings. It can also be an indication of hunger, agony or the presence of an unneeded guest like a prowler. Irrespective of your dog's purpose, your target is to correct this improper behaviour.

Canine Obedience Training Tips From The Dog Experts

There are some training tips that you can acquire from experts. Take a look at the web and you will find numerous websites that teach dog keepers about coping with these unwelcome behaviours. When you purchased a dog obedience training device like canine obedience training collars, you can train your dog properly and keep the dog from his unwanted behaviours. It has a remote hand held device that permits you to emit mild pulses of electronic kicks to manipulate your dog from their nonessential actions. The dog's receiver collar will correct the dog's behaviour after it received a signal for activation from the remote controller handed by the dog trainer. Using dog obedience training collars will also deliver the specified outcomes provided you obtain good brands and models.

Eventually, be patient when conducting training for your pet. There is not any harm in consulting experienced dog trainers who can offer you helpful pointers. Set a schedule for canine obedience training and conform to this program so you can witness the results at the appointed time.

How to Find Health Promoting Pet Food

By Nadine Dylan

Finding the Pet Food that may Optimize Your Pet's Health

It's understandable we all love our pets, and we all want to ensure that they live long and healthy lives. We bring them to the veterinarian for checkups and vaccinations, we spay and neuter them to reduce the animal population, and then we open our hearts as well as our homes to them. We also are put through a regular flow of pet food commercials, each and every company attempting to encourage us that their pet food is exceptional to the others. The unfortunate truth, although, is that not all pet food companies possess your beloved animal's best interests at heart.

In fact, much of the dog/cat food on the market is not nutrient thick; rather, it depends mostly on fillers and animal byproducts. Pay attention to the list of ingredients for the pet food you may have on hand. Also so-called top quality brand pet foods have ingredients that is going to take you aback.

The first 5 elements listed commonly from the lion's share of the pet food. Major cat food and dog food brands will include things like chicken by-product meal, corn grits, corn meal or corn gluten meal, and wheat flour or wheat gluten. A great diet plan for cats is one that's human grade. As an example, cat food need to contain a concentrated, high-quality protein source just like chicken meal, ground brown rice, rice flour, chicken fat, and dried beet pulp. Dog food should contain the same ingredients, except for substituting oat groats for rice flour.

The list of ingredients in your dog/cat food may be shocking, but it is also shocking to discover that even high quality brands don't generally include things that will keep your pet's health and longevity.

What are most of these ingredients? For dogs and cats, nutritious food should include vegetables and fruits, that have antioxidants, as well as fiber, vitamins, and phytonutrients. It should have direct-fed microbials - the kinds of microbials that are found in yogurt that will help retain good health. Similarly, omega-3 fatty acids should be included in a nutritious pet food, both because they assist health and simply because they keep your pet's coat shiny.

If you contrast how we eat with exactly how our pets eat, it becomes clear that the grade of their food is fully necessary. Naturally, we eat a wide array of foods, and can constantly supplement our diets with vitamins if we skip on the vegetables or perhaps fruit. Our pets, however, eat the exact same food day in and day out for the majority of their lives, with a few added treats from time to time; if there's an essential nutrient lacking, they do not have a chance to eat it elsewhere.

Life's abundance is supposed to be shared. Our pets give us so much unconditional love that the least we can do in exchange is give them human grade, nutritious pet food that may ensure that they improve our lives for many years.

Treating Puppy Diarrhea

By Cathy Doggins

Anyone that has any experience with owning a dog has probably dealt with one wave of diarrhea in a dog . If that's the case then you understand how challenging this can be both due to the mess the puppy may create and also because you could be worried about your puppy, wondering what could possibly be causing the problem.

There are many causes of diarrhea in the canine, varying in seriousness from mild stomach upset to malignant cancer. Diarrhea can be acute, meaning the issue has come up all of a sudden over the past few days, or persistent, meaning the problem has been present for a while. Most cases of acute diarrhea in an otherwise fit adult dog are due to gastroenteritis, which is inflammation or infection of the intestinal tract. Dogs are natural scavengers and eat organic matter without much subtlety. Many cases of gastroenteritis are caused by consumption of a dead animal or irritating plant or mushroom in the yard. Usually the owner is not aware that the dog has eaten the item and a definite cause can't be identified. The good news is that most instances of gastroenteritis are self-limiting, meaning they will resolve on their own without medical intervention. Nevertheless there are some strategies you can implement to hurry this process along.

The very first thing you should do when you spot your dog has diarrhea is to evaluate your dog for any other aberrations. Is your dog also throwing up or refusing food? Is your dog scattered around more and not wanting to play? Does your dog look swollen or act painful? If the answer to any of those questions is yes, then your dog could be afflicted with something more severe than gastroenteritis and may need animal care. Also take your dogs age and breed into consideration. For a pup or a toy-breed dog, their little body size means even mild diarrhea can cause significant dehydration fairly swiftly.

If your dog has no symptoms aside from the diarrhoea and is an otherwise sound adult dog with a case of gastroenteritis, the most important thing you can do to stop the diarrhoea is to withhold food from the dog. Withholding food for 12-24 hours will permit the GI tract to rest while not adding any new irritations. Water should not be withheld and, in reality the dog should be prompted to drink water or eat ice cubes to stop dehydration. Once you have fasted your dog for 12-24 hours and the diarrhoea appears to be improving, you can begin feeding a bland diet in tiny amounts. You can make your own tasteless diet at home using lean ground turkey and white rice. Be sure to cook the ground turkey never serve raw meat to a dog, as they're susceptible to the same food-borne sicknesses we are. Feed the tasteless diet in tiny amounts (about 1 tbsp per 10 pounds of body weight) every hour or so for the subsequent 12-24 hours. As long as the diarrhoea continues to become better you can continuously increase the amount of the bland diet over the next 1-2 days, then transition back to your dogs normal diet over 3-4 days.

If your dogs diarrhea doesn't improve with the above diet or reoccurs, you may be handling something more heavy than easy gastroenteritis, or your dog may need a special antibiotic or other kind of medicine that can only really be prescribed by a vet.

Halifax found guilty of misleading customers on pet insurance

By Freddie A. Fowler

Anyone who has a dog or cat or any other pet will know that they are a part of the family. People throughout the UK spend millions of pounds every year to ensure that their pet stays fit and healthy. This includes spending money on food, toys, grooming and training products and much more. Sometimes pets become ill though and for that reason most people also pay for pet insurance to make sure that they can get treatment for their pet should it need it.

Halifax was until recently a company which offered pet insurance. Halifax's pet insurance was also very popular with more than 30,000 customers. Halifax described their pet insurance as life-long to customers so they could receive cover for their pet's entire life as long as they kept up their payments and renewed each year. This wasn't however the case as customers found out when Halifax withdrew from the pet insurance business along with terminating thousands of policies.

Halifax's policy provided people with cover for on-going illnesses but by ending their cover people would not be able to claim on a new policy because it would be classed as an existing illness. This left a lot of people facing huge vet bills. After numerous complaints about Halifax misleading customers the financial ombudsman service looked into the company's pet insurance policy to assess whether Halifax were in the wrong.

The financial ombudsman service decided that Halifax had misled their customers by describing their cover as life-long and that it was a major error on the company's behalf to advertise it in this way if they were not going to fulfil it. With this outcome Halifax are facing thousands of potential compensation claims from all of those customers who were misled by the life-long cover.

In excess of 30,000 people were paying for Halifax's life-long pet cover when the company terminated the product and of those an estimated 4,000 have pets with on-going illnesses. Halifax will now have to pay these people compensation to help them pay for pet bills but they are also likely to have to offer top-up cover to make sure that their former customer's pets can get treatment.

You want to ensure that you are using the most common and proven methods when training your dog. This article will go into detail with the most popular and tested methods and let you know how to implement them. Follow the tried and true methods listed, and you should see success in your training.

Switch your rewards if you find that your dog no longer works as hard for them. Dogs can get bored with their treats just like humans do. Picking a fragrant reward or trying a reinforcement that is not food-based might just might help cure your dog of his reluctance!

You may want to leave a radio on in the room with him and possibly cover the crate to help reduce his anxiety. Once he is calm, bring him out and reward him for his calm behavior.

Even for dogs who are accustomed to training, you don't want to go over about twenty minutes for basic training. If you notice your dog starting to lose interest, stop the session for the day. If you try and push it. you'll get to get irritated and things will go down hill. It's better to quite while you're ahead.

Most puppies have a very short attention span. Don't exhaust your puppy with too much training at one time. Have short sessions that focus on one thing you'd like them to learn. Keep things simple so that nobody gets confused or frustrated, and try to end on a high note.

When training your dog, remember to be patient. This will prevent both you and your dog from getting angry and frustrated with the training process. Remember that your dog really does want to please you, but sometimes he gets confused because he speaks a different language and cannot understand what you are asking.

If you know the right way to crate train your puppy, then it will make it much easier for your new dog to understand the rules of the house. Beginner Species - Scarlet Cleaner Shrimp

By Paul Martin

Marine Tank Guide - Cleaning Critters

For the amateur saltwater Aquarist there are countless animals that can go in the marine tank but with this variety of choice there is sometimes a lot of confusion. In this article we are going to speak about one of many saltwater aquarium cleaners; the Scarlet Cleaner Shrimp.

One of the most if not the most popular specimens for cleaning a marine tank has to be the Scarlet Cleaner Shrimp. Technically known as Lysmata Amboinensis, this species is popular with sea Aquarists both advanced and newb alike. A hardy animal that will clean your tank and its inhabitants.

For the newbie, the Scarlet Cleaner Shrimp is a worthy addition to the fresh marine tank. With its wide range diet, and the facility to clean fish of their parasites and infestations from the mouth and the gills. Fish will in reality remain still and eagerly allow the shrimp to scour from head to tail cleaning and feeding as it is going.

This species of shrimp is also anemone and reef safe. Unlike some cleaner crabs that will interrupt your reef being quite harmful in the process , the Scarlet Cleaner Shrimp will leave the reef sufficiently well alone. They are quite content to wander and scour the tank for every morsel of eatable waste they can find. Less waste means cleaner water and a reduced burden on the purification system. These shrimp all round offer various benefits to any marine aquarium. They're quite colorful and fascinating to observe especially when they are essentially cleaning the other animals in the tank.

The one caution you want be conscious of with this species however. They're hermaphrodite and can change sex dependent on the environment. Because they have such a high motivation for survival, should you put more than two in your tank, they will under darkness fight and kill one another off till only 1 pair remains. So only put two of these animals in your marine aquarium.

Because these shrimp rarely disturb reefs or the reef inhabitants, they are found to be perfect for FOWLR or reef tanks. I would however avoid integrating the Scarlet Cleaner in FO (Fish Only) tanks as they can more than likely be offered up as a meal for much larger more dangerous fish.

How To Take Care For Your Fish Pond In Winter

By Owen Jones

If you reside in a temperate zone, fish from temperate zones can easily overwinter outside. On the other hand, tropical fish would die without a water heater. We will be looking at how you can keep cold water, temperate climate fish happy during a typical winter.

If you live in an area where winter is cold enough to produce ice, you will have to bear this in mind when you make your fish pond. How thick is ice normally in your area? In most cases, a 'deep end' of thirty to forty five inches should be ample, but you will have to get advice locally if you do not know the answer. A pet store, a neighbour or the zoo can offer the required advice.

The other problem with winter and ice is that a layer of ice prevents noxious gases escaping and oxygen entering, as it would do in the normal course of events. Therefore, you will have to ensure that there is always a hole in the ice. However, smashing a hole will frighten the fish.

There are several ways by which this air hole can be kept open under mild freezing conditions:

Aerator: a bubbler, can be positioned in the pond. It has to be submerged, obviously, and it has to be pretty forceful, so that the bubbles keep breaking the ice above it. If it is placed in water that is too shallow, it can freeze up too, so that is a factor to be borne in mind.

De-icer: a mild, floating heater. This kind of device does not create enough heat to endanger pond liners, but it is adequate to keep a small surface locale ice free under most weather conditions.

Water pump: a pump pumping water at force through the surface can keep a breathing hole in your pond, but only under fairly mild icy conditions. The pump must be placed in deep water or it could freeze solid.

Hoola-Hoop: if the weather is only mildly icy, a hoola-hoop with a round football floating in its centre can be effective at preventing ice forming within the hoop. The wind keeps the ball moving within the hoop and ice does not get a chance to develop.

This hole in the ice is important. Your fish will be semi-dormant in the winter and you may not see them for months, but they still need to breathe and excrete and the gases that that and the plants give off have to be allowed to escape or they will poison the water and kill your fish.

At this time of the year it is extremely important not to over-feed. Fish build up layers of fat during the summer and live off that fat during their semi-hibernation during the winter, but they do eat sometimes. The only problem for you is that you will not know which days they decide to come up for a nibble.

This is where the hoola-hoop can come in handy again. If you only feed within the hoola hoop, you can see how much food has been taken and how much has been left. Aspire to give no more than they will eat.

How To Maintain The Oxygen Level In Your Pond

By Owen Jones

We all know that stress kills in the human world, but did you know that stress kills in the animal kingdom as well? It should not really come as much of a surprise an humans are only intelligent animals anyway. Stress kills animals, as well as fish as certain as it kills us.

However, fish do not pay bills and most of them do not even care about their kids. Some fish even eat their own children, so why does stress build up in a fish?

Well, stress can build up in a fish for lots of reasons, but the main one is bad environment, which means water that has a chemical imbalance or a lack of oxygen. Fish can also get stressed, if it does not have anywhere to hide from predators or the sun.

It is straightforward to give your fish somewhere to hide. You can grow plants in tubs or buy floating lilies and you can also create caves of a sort for the fish to go into. A chemical imbalance can be checked with a kit and rectified by following the instructions that came with that testing kit.

Algae can have a huge effect on the amount of oxygen in your pond's water. During the day, the algae consumes carbon dioxide and produces oxygen - all well and good - but at night the reverse is true and a mass of algae can suck all the oxygen out of your pond water in no time at all.

So you have to control the amount of algae in your pond. And it is no good scraping it off the walls and hoping it will die, because rotting vegetation also uses up oxygen. Excess algae has to be got rid of. A rule of thumb to check whether your pond water holds enough oxygen is to watch your fish. If they are continuously gulping air at the surface, then your pond water is oxygen deficient.

Warm water has less capacity to hold water than cool water. Once water temperature reaches 80F or 25C, then you can be fairly sure that your pond water requires mechanical aeration. A fountain or a waterfall may not be enough, but it could be - it depends on the size of your pond, the number of plants, the number of fish, the surface area of the pond and the quantity of algae.

It is not easy to determine the oxygen content of the water in your pond, but you can keep an eye on the general appearance of your pond and its contents. Algae is bad news, in general, do you have a lot of it? Are your plants, particularly the lilies doing well? Are your fish gasping at the surface? Are they lethargic or lively?

By looking at these indicators you should be able to get a good idea of what is happening in your pond. If you do not have a fountain, get one. Are things any better? If not, install a bubbler. Did that help? If not enough get a better filtration system and let the water run back into your pond via a waterfall. If that does not work, give up and try bee-keeping!

Understanding Pony (EVA) Equine Viral Arteritis

By Heather Toms

In recent days, I've seen a lot of horse owners pay serious attention to this illness. They are attempting to learn as much as they can about it, because too many of their brethren who neglected to immunize their horses against this disease paid a severe cost. This disease is now receiving such prominence that out of concern American Quarter Horse Association has expressed willingness to include EVA vaccination info in the permanent records of horses. Only in recent days has this disease received some attention; lots of pony owners are still not very sure what the illness is all about.

EVA is due to a certain herpes virus. It is an acute infection of the upper-respiratory tract. Though folk had known about this illness for some considerable time, they sadly didn't focus on it the way in which they should have. The disease first gained fame in 1984 when an outbreak attacked thoroughbred horses in Kentucky. Because of a great deal of commonality in symptoms, this illness was at first taken to be influenza or Rhinopneumonitis. Just like with these two conditions, horses inflicted with EVA develop fever and experience an enormous amount of nasal discharge.

EVA is particularly serious on adult horses, particularly bloodmares. Horses of all ages can be susceptible, but broodmares fare worst. They are mature horses as well as pregnant horses frequently. The herpes virus behind this illness regularly brings about terminations in pregnant mares. It's not mandatory for a mare to be infected herself; she will be able to develop the illness thru the infected semen of a stallion.

Symptoms also include increase in rates of respiration, leg swelling and sometimes skin sores. The viruses present aren't simply detectable; this task needes suitably equipped laboratories. Lab procedures are usually critical to diagnose this illness. Mortality rates connected with EVA reach as high as 33% and abortion rates in pregnant mares can reach an amazing 50%. Exposure to nasal discharge and blood are the major factors behind this disease.

A modified vaccination for EVA became available after the Kentucky pandemic, in 1985. The American Quarter Horse Association is trying to help horse owners by storing data on the vaccination records of their horses. This is being done as a free courtesy. This sort of database significantly helps quick contact with the AQHA for verification that a horse has been vaccinated.

You can address any comments, questions and concerns to the AQHA.

The Pros And Cons Of Keeping Heritage Poultry

By Melody Lyons

Heritage poultry is a term that refers to specific breeds that are not mass-produced for meat or eggs. They are often in danger of extinction, due to the low numbers of people keeping them these days. Both laying and meat breeds are available, with a certain number of dual-purpose breeds.

The most common types of poultry for people to keep are chickens, ducks, quails, turkeys, and geese. By far, most people keep chickens. There are many different heritage breeds of chicken, and they range from the rather odd and spectacular to the relatively plain and mundane.

Chickens are easy to keep in comparison to some animals. If you have access to the outdoors and space for a coop, you can probably keep chickens. They are not permitted in all cities, but there are a fair amount of suburban and urban areas that permit a few hens to be present on the property. Roosters are typically not allowed.

Keeping your chickens healthy is aided by their natural resistance to disease. This is one reason that people prefer the older breeds, because their immune systems have not been weakened by breeding to excessive size, eggs, or other qualities. These breeds were created when there were no antibiotics, and survival of the fittest reigned.

Chickens can be shipped across the country when they are newly hatched, because the chicks are nourished by their yolk sacs and don't need food for a couple of days. Many hatcheries sell minimum quantities higher than hobbyists want, but you can sometimes combine shipments with other people. Local farms are great sources of birds, but may only have one or two breeds.

Bantam chickens are another possibility for people who want to embrace the unusual even further, or who lack space. These chickens are tinier versions of their larger cousins, and come in heritage poultry varieties as well as some of their own. They are around half the size of a typical chicken when full grown.

Tips For Taking Care Of Horses In Winter Months

By John Dorian

When you care for your horse, it is important to make preparations for the winter months. Horses need to be able to tolerate the cold weather and stay as healthy as possible. Horses, like other animals, have special considerations an owner has to attend to in the winter. So with that in mind, you want to prepare for winter well ahead of time.

The cold would normally leave most horses unfazed. You may be surprised to know that horses actually prefer the cold. Despite this, there are some basic things owners will want to do to make sure their horses stay healthy. Your horse would need to have some shots and be totally free of parasites during this time. The costs for doing these things will greatly pay off during the winter. You can save some money as well, particularly on food for your horse.

You may also want to work with your vet in setting up a health plan for your horse. This would include prepping your horse's diet for cold weather conditions so that it does not need to consume copious amounts of chow to stay at a healthy weight. Your horse should never lose weight during the winter. This may call for some preventative tactics, such as feeding your horse a little extra before the winter months, as the extra weight could provide more calories, therefore more energy under duress. Continue the process in the winter by giving your horse extra calories for extra energy.

Horses have a natural winter coat which keeps them warm and cozy once December rolls around. This coat is something that you would want to see growing naturally, as it gives them natural protection in a cold setting, offsetting the loss of heat emanating from their bodies. Ice and snow would also tend to bounce off the horse's coat. If your horses really have to stay outside, their coats need to be at a certain length well before winter.

To check the condition of your horse, you will want to rub its ribs. A large winter coat can easily hide the fact the horse may be losing weight. You want to feel the ribs of your horse when you touch it, but you do not want to see them, as this is a sign they may be getting emaciated. Also check the ears of your horse. Are they as cold as the weather? If so, this is a sign that the horse is cold.

A horse's survival is ensured by its maintaining a normal and healthy body temperature. To sum it all up, horses need to conserve heat in the winter months, so it is your duty as owner to make sure this happens.

The easy way to Select the Right Food For Pet Dogs

By John Wright

You are uniquely well-qualified to choose the best Food For Pet Dogs.

No one is in a better position than you are to choose which food you must feed your dog. That won't be what you needed to hear. You'll have been wishing that someone would reveal to you the name of the planet's most healthy food, so you could just buy that and have it done with.

But dogs, just like folk, are individuals. What works for this dog will not work for that one. A Pointer who goes jogging with his marathon-running owner every day desires a lot more calories than the Golden Retriever who watches TV all day. The diet that contains enough fat to keep that sled dog warm thru an Alaskan winter would kill that Small Poodle who suffers from pancreatitis. The commercial kibble that stopped my Border Collie's itching and scratching in its tracks may lead to your Bedlington Terrier to develop copper storage illness.

Each food on the market contains different ingredients, and each one has the potential to cause symptoms of allergy or prejudice in some dogs. Each food contains a different ratio of macronutrients - protein, fat, and carbohydrates - and you have got to learn by trial and error which ratio works best for your dog.

Every article contains varying amounts of vitamins and minerals, and though most fall within the ranges considered acceptable by the Organisation of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO), some might be north of, or deficient to your dog's wants.

So how do you select?

The starting place

Well, you have got to begin somewhere, and you unquestionably have. Your dog is eating something already. Our objective is to help you identify the foodstuffs with the best-quality ingredients - full meats, plants, fruits, and grains, and fine quality sources of diet fat - to get you into the right "ballpark" re quality. Then you've got to start individualised feeding trials on your dog.

Start by weighing up your dog's health. Take a bit of paper and jot down a list with 2 columns: one for health Problems, and one for health assets. Any conditions for which she receives veterinary care or medicines go in the "problems" column. Other conditions that should be listed here include halitosis; teeth that are susceptible to tartar build up; chronically goopy eyes; infection-prone or stinky ears; a smelly, oily, flaky, or thinning coat; itchy paws; exaggerated gas; recurrent dysentery, trots, or incontinence; repeated infestations of worms or fleas; low or excessive energy; and a unexpected onset of antisocial or aggressive behavior.

In the health assets column, list all the health traits that your dog has in her favor, for example fresh breath, clean teeth, bright eyes, clean ears, a dearth of itching, a glossy coat, problem-free elimination, a standard appetite and energy level, and a good disposition.

If there are a lot more assets on your list than issues, and the issues are very minor, you may have already found a diet plan that works well for your dog. But if your list exposes a lot more Problems than assets, your dog is a good candidate for a change of diet - as well as an exam and some direction from a good holistic veterinarian!

Now take a quick look at the food you are presently feeding your dog. Note the food's ingredients alongside its protein and fat levels, and its calorific content. Write all of this down, so you can make logical adjustments if required.

Nutritive management of illness

Only two decades ago, it was considered fairly radical to suggest that canine sicknesses could be treated, at least in part, by manipulating the patients ' diets. Today, the increasing availability of "prescription" diets is the big story in the pet food industry.

Sicknesses that may be improved with dietary management include:

- Allergy or prejudice. There are a number of breeds that are especially at the mercy of food sensitivities, including Cocker Spaniels, Dalmatians, English Springer Spaniels, Labrador Retrievers, Lhasa Apsos, Miniature Schnauzers, and more. Again, it?s important to keep notes of what foods you feed your dog, what they contain, and how your dog looks and feels. If your records suggest that one or more ingredients trigger bad reactions in your dog, hunt down foods that do not contain those ingredients in any amount
- Cancer. Fat rich, low-carbohydrate (or carb-free) diets are ideal for cancer patients. Cancer-infected cells use carbohydrates for energy, and do not easily utilize fat, so you can effectively "starve" the cancer cells while supplying extra energy to your dog with a diet loaded in a top quality fat sources.
- Inherited metabolism aberrations. Some breeds are prone to diseases with a strong nutritional influence. As an example, the West Highland White Terrier and the Cocker. Spaniel have an inherited tendency to be afflicted by copper build up in the liver; these dogs should eat a diet that is created with low levels of copper. Malamutes and Siberian Huskies can inherit a zinc metabolism disorder, and need a high-zinc diet (or zinc additions).

Calorific concerns

Another thing you have got to consider is the caloric content of the food you choose. If the food you choose for your dog is energy-dense, and your dog is a layabout, you'll have to chop her daily ration considerably to prevent her from getting fat. Some dogs make a response to forced dieting with begging, counter-surfing, and garbage-raiding. If your dog is one of these, you could have to find a high-fibre, local food - one that isn't always contain the highest-quality protein or fat sources on the market - to keep your dog feeling happily full without getting fat.

Dogs exhibit a wide range of energy needs. You'll have to find a higher- or lower-calorie food primarily based on the following attributes that can influence your dog's energy needs:

- Activity level. The more a dog exercises the more energy he needs to consume to maintain his condition; it's that simple.
- Expansion. Growing puppies have higher energy needs than adult dogs. A food with a higher protein level, but a reasonable (not high) fat level is ideal. Overweight puppies are far more susceptible to degenerative joint disease - especially in big and giant breeds - than puppies with an ordinary or slim physique.
- Age. The age at which a dog becomes an older citizen varies from breed to reproduce, with larger dogs considered geriatric at earlier ages. Older dogs typically require fewer calories to maintain their body weight and condition, mainly because they have an inclination to be less active than younger dogs.
- Environmental conditions. Dogs who live or spend plenty of their time outside in grim cold temperatures need from 10 percent to close to 90 percent more energy than dogs who enjoy a warm climate. The thickness and quality of the dog's coat, the quantity of subcutaneous fat he has, and the standard of his shelter have direct effects on the dog's energy wishes.
- Illness. Sick dogs have gone up energy wants; it takes energy to mount an immunological reaction or fix tissues. However , dogs who do not feel well also are inactive, which lowers their energy needs.
- Reproduction. A pregnant female's energy duty doesn't increase noticeably till the final third of her pregnancy, when it may increase by an element of three.
- Lactation. A nursing female may require as much as 8 times as much energy as a female of the same age and condition who is not nursing.
- Fixing. It is normally accepted that neutered (and spayed) dogs have reduced energy needs. Nonetheless there are basically no studies that definitively prove that neutered dogs require fewer calories simply as a result of lower hormone levels. It has been advised that these dogs gain weight thanks to increased appetites and/or decreased activity levels.
- Other individual factors. Other factors that can affect a dog's energy obligation include its personality (twitchy or placid?) and skin, fat, and coat quality (how well he is insulated against climatic conditions).

Human factors

Eventually, there are the human factors that will change your dog-food purchasing decision, eg cost and local availability. Realise that there is a connection between the quality of an animal's food and his health , and do the best that can be done.
