By Geraldine Dimarco

Have you ever heard about crate training? In a nutshell, it is when you train dogs to go to their designated space, in this case a crate, for their alone time. Many people have thought that crate training is a mean way to treat a dog. Actually, it is not only a helpful tool in canine training-it is also a kind way to handle your pet.

Before dogs became the favorite household pets, their natural habitat was out in the wilderness. Caves and little nooks kept them safe from the dangers that lurked in the wild. Crates serve the same purpose. It gives them a place of safety where they can find peace and quiet from all the stress they may be experiencing.

Now we know that crates are not some sort of probationary measure or torture done to dogs-it will benefit us greatly to learn how to crate train our pets. Understand that with all canine training, it is always better to start early. Here are some great puppy training tips that experts can attest to and you can use.

Crate training a puppy can sometimes be challenging. I mean, how would you feel if this person that speaks in another language tries to put you in a box because it will e good for you? When you commence training, be very gentle with them. Keep in mind that if you rush them into this, the canine can be traumatized.

Find a good-sized crate that your dog will not feel cramped in without being too big. Make it as cozy as possible by putting in warm blankets, some dog treats and toys. Gently lead the dog inside the crate by feeding him treats leading up to it. When he is inside, leave the door open and continue to feed and pet him until he is completely relaxed.

After successfully introducing the crate to the pup, it's time to shut the door. Put in his favorite toy inside and let him be totally immersed in it before you slowly close the door. Make sure that he can still see you and hear your voice. Do not open the door when he cries. Instead, talk to him in a reassuring manner until he calms down. When he has quieted down, you can then bring him outside.

When he is at ease inside the closed crate, try leaving the room for several minutes. Gradually work it up to 30 minutes at a time. Of course, you know your dog best so use these puppy training tips only when it is suitable for your puppy's personality.

Crate training a puppy is an excellent activity for both the pet and owner-it will be worth all the trouble. Just think, with only a little discipline and perseverance-you can have an obedient and well-rounded puppy in no time at all.
