The 5 Items You Need to Housebreak Your Puppy

By Dirk Gruenberg

For most dog owners bringing home a new puppy is a big event. Most of the time a lot of things like a water bowl and appropriate food are in place. But what about the required house training supplies?

Housebreaking a new puppy is not as difficult as it may seem. But make sure you have the necessary tools at hand. So what do you need in the first place? What is absolutely essential is a gate or a crate: if possible, you should have both.

Puppies normally can't wait to be taken out if they feel the need to relieve themselves. This happens many times not only throughout the day but also at night.

The first step is to get a crate for your new dog. He will consider it as the place where he is sleeping and unless he absolutely can't hold it, he will not soil this place. In order to enable him not to, you have to take him out very frequently.

There are times when your pup is not in his crate but in the kitchen or another room with you. Even if you can watch him it may still be a good idea to have a gate blocking him from leaving this room.

Even in case you take out your pup on a regular basis one thing is for sure: accidents will happen. Here is what you never should do in such a case: don't punish your dog. It will not help at all. Simply clean up the mess. Just make sure you use a dog friendly cleaning product.

These cleaning supplies help not only sanitize but they assist in removing odors, so your dog isn't inclined to use that same area of the house for his next accident.

Finally, a dog collar, leash and puppy treats are the puppy house training supplies that will help you start actually training your dog how to go potty.

Your puppy loves to be praised by you as well as get a tasty biscuit as a reward. So put him on the leash and take him to the place you want him to use as his bathroom. As soon as he has completed his business praise and reward him. In a very short period of time, your puppy will understand what you want him to do and he will happily do so.
