Stop Your Dog Itching And Fix Dog Skin Problems

By Valery Robinson

A dull, patchy coat is an clear indication that your pet requires some treatment and attention. Dog skin problems cause problems for your pet and you. As an alternative to wasting hours cleaning up handfuls of hair from the floor and furniture, make sure your dog has a clean and healthy coat. Avoiding dog itching is much simpler than curing a dog rash. Fix dog skin problems before they turn into a huge problem.

## What Causes Itchiness in Dogs?

Finding out the cause is necessary to fixing the issue. Dry skin is one of the most typical problems, but it is one of many. Some other widespread reasons behind itchy skin are:

- Allergic reactions

- Pest bites

- Yeast infections

Insect bites are extremely simple to avoid, simply use a repellant. Most veterinarians suggest using a bug repellant anyway, since mosquito bites can cause heartworm. Allergies are a a lot more challenging to handle.

## Which Kind of Allergies Have an Impact on Dogs?

Dogs are at risk of the identical types of allergies that trouble people. Allergies to food items are a common problem that can cause a dog rash. Wheat is the primary ingredient in the vast majority of dog foods. Transferring to a hypoallergenic food cuts this issue before it begins. Look at the ingredient lists of any dog food you buy to ensure quality food. Of course, allergies are not the only culprit.

## Tips to Prevent Infections

Dog itching because of infection frequently occurs in long eared dogs. Dogs with droopy ears are more prone to yeast infections and ear mites specifically. Once it starts, a yeast infection is nearly impossible to get rid of, and it can propagate to any part of the body. Add a vitamin that contains acidophilus to your dog's diet and prevent the infection.

Most pet skin problems can be resolved with a change in diet. Adding a vitamin supplement or transforming dog food brands can make a big different in a dog's coat. Topical sprays reduce itchiness, preventing the spread of infection, giving treatments an opportunity to work. There are numerous products that will help keep your dog healthy, joyful and rash-free.

All About Australian Labradoodle Puppies

By Natasha Gonzalez

Labradoodles are technically not a breed, but every purebred dog now in existence came from crossing others that existed before it, so it can be argued that labradoodles are on their way to becoming a breed. Australian labradoodle puppies are probably the best example of this. They are multi-generational crossbreeds with a fairly well-defined standard. australian labradoodle puppies

Originally bred in the quest for a hypoallergenic guide dog, labradoodles did not succeed at this task. Poodles are very smart dogs that are not always happy to simply take orders. This makes them intelligent and delightful pets, but isn't the best trait in a guide dog. A few labradoodles and poodles do work as guides, but purebred labradors and other crosses do it better, on average.

The program ceased to exist for guide dog reasons a long time ago, but the dogs continued to be bred because people had fallen in love with the mix. Some people can tolerate poodles even if they have allergic reactions to other dogs, though this is a varied trait amongst people. Unfortunately, there is a myth that all labradoodles are non-shedding like the poodle, and this is not always true. Further complicating the matter, is that you cannot tell if a dog's adult coat will be non-shedding from their puppy coat.

Some of the breeders of the early multi-generational dogs wanted to fix certain traits, and one of these was the non-shedding nature. Unlike many breeders of labradoodles, they stopped breeding with purebred poodles and labradors fairly early on, and starting breeding their labradoodles together. Now, the Australian labradoodle can be fairly well known not to shed, and comes in a variety of sizes not originally available.

The dogs also come in a variety of sizes, now. The original cross was intended to produce a Labrador-sized dog, so it was made with a standard poodle. However, this is a bigger dog than some people want. Subsequent breedings with miniature poodles and their smaller offspring have created a viable miniature version of the hybrid, which is about the size of a large miniature poodle.

The temperament of Australian labradoodle puppies should be bright, alert, friendly, and sweet. This is strictly a companion breed, created for the pleasure of human beings. Like any dog, it is important to choose a reputable, responsible breeder to buy from.

How to Put Pony Manure to Good Use

By Heather Toms

If you have horses, you will also need a system of disposing of their fouled bedding and manure. The limit of this unavoidable chore is dependent upon the number of horses you have, but you can still control the total amount of time taken over this task. In reality, you need to treat manure as a great asset because it can be used to great advantage.

Horse manure is very rich in nitrogen, with various trace minerals and organic matter. Because of this, it is deemed to be high value fertilizer.

You have a couple of options for the manure you collect. It's easy to get it hauled away, you can apply it to your pasture or you can compost it for usage later and sale.

In very simple language, composting is a sort of successfully recycling bio-degradable waste like the remains of crop plants and other green matter and dung. Composting is a process whereby organic material is split up into a form of humus which has extremely high value as a fertilizer and land conditioner. Composting permits you to put to constructive use matter that you would instead have a problem in getting rid of.

You may put pony dung to some serious use as manure by spreading it on your pasture. Depending on the number of horses you have and the area of land you own, you can use excess dung for composting. For direct spreading on your pasture, all you have got to do is move the dung without delay onto a dung spreader during the cleaning process and take it out instantly to spread. You are not advised to keep the dung for too much time on the spreader, as the spreader can rot. You must alternate dung application to patches of land and move your horses around so that they do not graze on land where manure has been recently spread. You get the manure to settle in and do some soil enrichment work before you move your horses back for grazing. Late fall or early winter is generally the best time for dung spreading as the pastures are dry and snow-free, if you live in places where it snows in winter.

If you're unable to execute either of the 2 dung disposal techniques discussed in this article, or if you happen to have a lot of excess dung, you can arrange for a collection firm or gardening concern to take away the manure. It could also be offered free to neighbours and to any others interested.

Never Feed Dusty Hay To Your Horses

By Heather Toms

As a pony owner, you don't need it specifically pointed out to you that the hay you feed your horses must be free of dust as much as humanly possible. That is a obvious truth. But the actual fact that hay is a natural product grown and baled in fields of mud, makes it very tricky to keep it completely free of dust. Hay is vegetation which has grown in dust. Dust is dry dirt. Dust problems get exaggerated if it had rained a couple of days before baling the hay. Hay can get mouldy if it gets exposed to water. I am a mould and mildew expert, and can smell them at long distances. It doesn't need such sensitivity to make out the presence of mold and mildew , however , because they telegram themselves in a number of ways.

If some part of the hay from a bale feels heavier than the other parts, you know you have a potential difficulty with mould. Sniff around, and if there is mold, you will be able to make it out. If it appears to be present, open up the bale and give it a close inspection. You will be able to make out mold or mildew easily. Don't feed the hay to your horses if it shows the slightest signs of mould.

Prevention is always far better than cure. If the hay looks dusty, but does not smell dusty or mouldy, you can try to get rid of the dust by soaking it or hosing it down with water. You can always return the hay to the supplier.

If you are dealing with light amounts of dust, shake the bale out and dampen it. Ideally, you would never have dust in hay. We are not living in a perfect world nonetheless , because if we were you'd be getting hay cut shortly after a good rain and cured in a sunny dust-free environment before getting baled.

That sort of hay would remind you about green grass, odour-wise.

After release from quarantine, Smoke will settle in Nebraska where the Donkey will live and help an organization founded by Ret. Marine Col. John Folsom, Wounded Warriors Family Support, as a rehabilitation therapy animal.

The Best Wood Horse Fencing

By Chloe Gib

Installing Wood Horse Fencing is a big undertaking. There are several good options to choose from and the horse owner should carefully decide on what is best for them. Electric fences are quick to install and easy to move around. However, for permanent enclosures wood is the best choice.

The primary consideration is always the safety situation for the horses. Equines are big, powerful animals and they need to know that their fences are solid. If they are able to break out easily they learn not to respect their boundaries.

Whether installing the fence themselves or hiring a contractor, there are several good options to choose from. A good choice for equine fencing is split rail. Split rail has a great rustic look. It is also very easy to maintain and quick to repair. If one rail is broken it can easily be replaced.

Rail fencing is stronger than split rail. The rails are typically eight feet long and between six and eight inches deep. They are secured to posts by either nails or screws. Installation involves a lot of work. Usually a special machine drills the post holes and after they are securely set in the ground, the three or four rails are attached.

The rails also prevent the horses from sticking their heads through the fence. This is the cause of many accidents. If a horse gets his halter hooked on part of a fence, it can result in a very serious accident. It is crucial to ensure that there are no nails or other such hazards.

When planning the fence keep the terrain in mind. Also make sure there are no tight corners or sharp angles. Horses love to run and play and can sometimes pin each other into a corner. This is how many injuries occur. Designing horse fence options that minimizes these situations is a great step.

As many types of wood are available it is important to know which kinds work best for horses. The best type of wood to use is Locust. Locust does not rot and will be quite insect resistant. Cedar and Oak also have these qualities and are excellent choices.

Painting or staining the fence is a final step that is well worth the time. A coat of white paint is a very popular choice for horse fencing. Stains give a more natural finish and also provide additional water proofing.

Installing new Wood Horse fencing is a big project. Because of the expense involved it is worth spending more to purchase the best quality materials. If hiring a contractor check for references and be available to supervise the entire project. The safety of the horses depends on the quality of their fencing.

Cat Care - The Greatest, The Simplest, The Most All-natural

By John Q. Ruschmeyer II

Caring for your cat is straightforward when you consider to bear in mind her origins. Getting domesticated doesn?t indicate you really should abandon how she would dwell in the wild. Cats have evolved in the wild above millennia. They have been domesticated for a mere trifle in comparison.

This means that their nutritional and emotional needs remain identical to those of their forebears. In attempting to provide the best cat care means looking at these needs.

Lets search at their nutritional wants initial.

Wild cats hunt on their own. They hunt small animals, sometimes up to about their own size, but mostly smaller than themselves. They rarely eat anything other than freshly killed meat.

Contrasting this with a standard domestic cat?s diet program of dried pellets and you realise how off the mark industrial pet meals is. Even if dried pellets have been created with the very best cuts of meat (which they aren?t), the meat is nevertheless not fresh or raw.

So, if you?re trying to provide the most complete cat care, what should you feed your cat?

In my viewpoint, the greatest cat meals is raw meat and bones. You can?t totally duplicate a wild cat?s diet plan, but you can come so near as to not compromise her well being. Cat care begins with meals as this is consumed every day. Some thing carried out every day has a lot much more influence on our well being than say some thing that only occurs as soon as a year.

When a cat eats her prey, she will consume all the meat, such as the bones. Bones are the very best supply of calcium for a cat. And meat can only be effectively digested when it is consumed with bones. Right after all, all carnivores consume meat with bones.

Not only that, crunching up on bones is the best way of keeping her teeth and gums healthy, as long as they?re not too big. No dried pellets can do that as well, despite the promises on the label.

Some believe that providing a cat raw meat will trigger their hunting instinct. In my expertise, it does the precise opposite. Simply because raw meat is nutrient dense, your cat will be happy and won?t really feel the require to supplement her diet plan as when fed a nutrient deficient diet plan.

Organic cat care also implies offering your cat with her simple emotional and physical wants. Cats are intelligent and inquisitive. They want visual stimulation. This is very best served by getting outside, in which nature gives an abundance of stimulation.

If it?s not possible or also harmful to let your cat outdoors, do make certain she has entry to secure stimulants, maybe in the type of toys. Make certain you perform with her to make sure she gets sufficient physical exercise.

Sun is an crucial facet of excellent cat care. Cats really like the sun and it is crucial to excellent wellness for all of us, not just your cat. Typical outside entry will enable her to pick for herself. For confined cats, make positive there are instances when you can open a window (securely) to enable the sun?s rays in, unhindered by glass or plastic.

Straightforward cat care actually implies enabling your cat the freedom she desires. Confining cats indoors is going in opposition to excellent animal husbandry,

I am also of the viewpoint that declawing cats is not only painfully inhumane, it deprives the cat of the organic pleasure of stretching. If you are contemplating declawing your cat, possibly you really should also contemplate possessing a cat is not for you. Cats have previously adapted a fantastic deal to dwell with us. Placing them by way of an needless, inhumane and unpleasant operation is purely for your advantage, not your cats.

Cats provide us with an abundance affection, love and enjoyment. To provide even adequate cat care, we should at least do the same for them.

Dental Hygiene For Your Dogs

By Amos Navarro

Many people don't know that dental treatments are essential for puppies because just like people they have the teeth that need to have dental attention regularly for healthier life. Just like the people the dogs' teeth can easily gather oral plaque buildup after consuming.

When back plate accumulates and stiffens it becomes a coarse brown material referred to as tartar. Because tartar builds up it can operate its way underneath the nicotine gums and lead to agonizing microbe infections and also gums and teeth. It goes about within the teeth associated with dogs much like it lets you do in folks.

Veterinarians advise that puppy owners remember to brush their dog's teeth at least 2 times a week to maintain the actual buildup involving tartar at a minimum. Nearly all puppy supply retailers bring specifically created toothbrushes and tooth paste simply for canines. Keep in mind that any dog's a sense taste is far more acute compared to a person's as well as the zesty, tingly, mint flavor associated with toothpastes for people will likely be very awful to a pet. Attempt brushing Rover's tooth using Crest just the once and will also be the final time he or she allows you to anyplace close to your ex with a toothbrush. Make use of the specifically created doggy mouthwash.

Some people don't contain the time or endurance to clean their particular dogs' teeth on a regular basis. If you're one of them, you'll need to take care of Chopper's helicopters in yet another way. Any dog's organic trend to chew is a built-in dental care procedure. Pet cookies break into modest portions when chewed and caress contrary to the enamel, delivering a new cleaning support. There's simply no alternative to brushing your current dog's enamel, however, if you can't do that, be sure he gets some kind of crispy pet cookie often.

Canines that will not receive proper dental hygiene and never get access to stiff teeth cleaning foods risk several types of jaws condition. These could be because slight while gingivitis (a new gum disease which brings about inflamed, painful gum area) and as significant as being a infection that may distributed over the dog's blood vessels triggering injury to crucial organs. You borrowed from this in order to oneself along with your puppy to deal with his enamel.

Dental services for dogs, is quite like similar with people. The dog's teeth may be filled, capped, and also extracted if necessary, like a human's. The best plan of action, nevertheless, would be to steer clear of the dependence on this kind of services through effectively repairing your dog's enamel. If you can steer clear of unnecessary pain on your pet, you must do so. Protective doggie dental care can save you funds at the same time. Though keep in mind that dental processes can be quite pricey.

Health Issues To Consider For Safe Labrador Retriever Training, pt. 2

By Kate Truman

There are several dog health problems that could certainly have an effect on labrador retriever training. Indeed, such medical conditions could either impede or put a stop to your dog's training progress. Failure to take proper preventative steps might result to the development of severe health problems. As the saying goes, prevention is always better than cure. Unfortunately, there are several dog diseases that are truly inescapable, particularly those conditions that are generated by their parents' genes.

Weight issues, obesity

Most massive dogs have large appetites; and thus, they have the inclination to put up with weight problems like obesity. Incorrect feeding habits and the provision of unhealthy meals or treats are frequently the reason why big dogs like the labrador retrievers tend to grow bigger than they're meant to. Dog owners should always bear in mind the need for discipline, especially when enforcing a strict diet.

Seek the advice of your vet concerning the best kind of diet or the kinds of nutrients required to augment your labrador's overall health. In this way, you can avoid struggling with weight issues, and prevent the prevalence of obesity and its complications. Unsurprisingly, an obese labrador is not that productive and easy to train with. You are less likely to achieve effective labrador retriever training.

Centroneuclear Myopathy or Hereditary Myopathy of Labrador Retrievers (HMLR)

As the name signifies, this muscle defect is hereditary; the affected lab got his disease genes from both his parents regardless whether they've displayed some symptoms or not. This condition is oftentimes characterized by the deficit of type II muscle fibers that leads to the massive decrease in skeletal muscle mass. Symptoms include an abnormal gait and posture together with weakness in the muscles that often cause low tolerance to strenuous physical exercises and training.

Now this means that your dog is not made for arduous labrador retriever training activities. However, it doesn't necessarily mean that your lab is no longer efficient at doing anything. Sadly though, there is no helpful cure for such condition. Yet, rest and proper ways of managing can minimize the pain and it's other symptoms. Take into account that cold and stress should be sidestepped as your suffering labrador retriever is very susceptible to them.

Exercise Induced Collapse (EIC)

This condition is most widespread in young adult labrador retrievers. This syndrome of exercise intolerance and collapse is passed down or genetic. Several affected dogs are even identified as muscular and fit or healthy. And even though moderate types of physical exercises can be tolerated by affected labs, it is wise that you be very cautious and heedful when carrying out your labrador retriever training routines. In this manner, you will realize when to stop.

Overexertion and overwhelming enthusiasm often induce weakness in the legs that is then accompanied by collapse. Most affected labradors remain conscious after collapsing while others become utterly stunned and disoriented. Keep in mind that it's important for you to end any activities upon display of wobbliness or in-coordination. Some dogs have perished during training or exercise, and others while they were resting soon after experiencing such condition.

Labrador Retriever Training Goals

By Kate Truman

You don't provide Labrador Retriever training mainly because you are expected to do so. Training must be provided because it is needed in order to make your dog healthy and happy. While it's the general goal of every training, a labrador can be trained to focus on attaining a particular objective like becoming a:

Guide dog.

Also referred to as disabled-assistant or seeing eye dog, guide dogs are trained to guide those with disabilities specifically those with visual impairment. Potential guide dogs are trained early on commencing on socialization, potty training and basic obedience training. After a dog is fully-trained and can be trusted when guiding, he is then matched with a blind person. After the right dog is partnered to a right person, both are trained to work out together as team. Because of their intelligence and work ethics, Labradors together with Golden Retrievers and German Shepherds are the most popular options however, other breeds such as Yorkshire Terriers, Poodles and Boxers could become guide dogs too if given appropriate Labrador Retriever training.

Hunting dog.

Labradors being used in hunting as well much like other gun dogs. Having been bred to help retrieve fishing nets, Labradors have webbed paws and water-repellent coat, characteristics that help make fishing and waterfowl hunting easy. Furthermore, this breed is famous for being athletic and for their love for water and swimming thus whatever activity that has something to do with water is rarely a dilemma.

Choosing Healthy Chihuahua Teacup Puppies

By Jen Tickle

Very small animals need special care, as do babies, and Chihuahua teacup puppies qualify as both. Being prepared ahead of time and choosing to only purchase from a responsible breeder will make it much easier to care for your new puppy. The importance of choosing a great breeder cannot be overstated.

Breeders use the term 'teacup' to mean an extremely small dog. However, it has no standardized meaning, so the definition can vary from breeder to breeder. Chihuahuas bred to the breed standard are very small to begin with, something that many people are not aware of because there are so many poorly-bred, larger ones around. The standard says this breed should not exceed 5 pounds.

Dogs that are too small cannot safely carry a litter. Depending on which breeder you ask, the lowest possible size is about 3 1/2 pounds. This means that larger females are required in order to keep creating tiny pups, who may have a tiny father. Sometimes a tiny pup appears in a litter from 'normal' sized (3-5 pound) dogs, as well.

Because pups are much closer to the same size at birth than they are at maturity, there is only room for a Chihuahua female to have one to two pups at a time. Four is a very big litter. Sometimes there will be a smaller pup, and sometimes they'll all be about the same size. The 'runt' may or may not stay smaller.

A good breeder can tell you approximately how big the dog will be, but no one can guarantee it. Much more important is health, which should not be compromised for size. Choose a responsible breeder who aims to better the breed and does rigorous testing on her dogs before breeding.

Small pups have issues related to their size that you should discuss with the breeder. Some of them have trouble with low blood sugar, which happens when they don't eat often enough. Most pups grow out of this problem, but it can be a lifelong issue for an extremely tiny dog. Talk to your breeder about both prevention and treatment of this issue.

Tiny Chihuahua teacup puppies have little bladders, too. This means that they may have to go more frequently than you want to get up to take them out. If you desire to do so, this size dog is easily paper or litter-box trained, which can relieve you from some of the effort. But you will still need to teach your pup to use them.

Considering The Bulk Of A Fish Tank And The Obstacles It Requires

By Julie Lowry

When looking at salt water fish tanks you need to be conscious that the size of the marine aquarium must be a lot larger than that for freshwater sea life. Sea life that live in rivers or creeks are used to the rise and fall of the water volume. It will increase in the wet season and decrease in parched weather. They can acclimatize to these changes. Marine life that live in the the deep don't have this ability to get used to to new water volumes as they by no means have to. Despite the consequences of the weather, sea levels will stay fairly stable at least as far as the marine life are concerned.

Salt water fish tanks should be made from glass. There shouldn't be any metal attachments as these will corrode when in constant contact with the water and can leak into the tank poisoning the marine life. This includes metal hoods which can bring about condensation that trickles back into the water and proves toxic to the inhabitants.

Some folks will suggest that you use ordinary sea water in your tank but this is not recommended. While the marine life would be keen on it, the sea water near the shoreline is likely to be impure.

You are better off using the provisions sold either on the 'net or at your community pet store. You must adhere to the directions accurately when preparing the water mixture or your marine life will die. Salt water fish tanks require more awareness to set up and more ongoing maintenance than the freshwater equivalent.

How do you go about choosing the marine life for the tank? The fish themselves should be fit and the sort that lives in the the deep. You need to bear in mind that you will probably be obtaining young fish that may grow a lot larger in size. You don't want to overfill your aquarium as it is unjust on the populace.

Help for Dog Owners: How Much Food to Feed Your Dog

By Dirk Gruenberg

When you get a new dog, there will be plenty of decisions that need to be made. One very important one is what kind of food you want to feed your dog - and how much.

Most dog owners make their decisions on what kind of food to feed pretty fast. However, the amount that a dog needs is usually a little more difficult to determine. So, how will you know how much you need to feed?

Well, first of all, let me say that there is no one-size-fits-all kind of number here. A lot of factors play into the equation of how much food your dog needs to be well nourished.

Age, size, and breed are three of those factors. Moreover, health and activity level also play into the equation. Taking these factors into account, you will just have to make an educated guess. To do so, you might find the following two sources to be helpful.

Start with the obvious one: the dog food label. On the label you will find explicit statements about what amount should be fed. These are usually broken down into different weight and age groups. Use these as general starting point.

Source number two is a great asset, too: your vet. He should be able to give you some insight into what your dog needs. Simply ask him for advice, but only after describing your dog's lifestyle -including his activity level- to him.

One more important thing is to simply always keep an eye on your dog's weight. This is more important than most dog owners realize.

Often times, dog owners feel that they do not feed their dogs too much, yet their dogs are overweight. Let me be very clear about this: dogs that get fed the right amount will not be overweight.

Or put differently: if you see your dog gaining weight, then the cause is that he is eating too much. In this case, simply reduce how much you are feeding - also subtract the treats from his daily portions.

Reduce Pet Stress with a Microchip Cat Flap

By Cynthia Shaunbauer

If you are looking for a way to give your cat more opportunities to go outdoors, or want to make sure that your cat can come indoors when it is necessary, you may want to consider a microchip cat flap. This unique device will read a cat?s implanted microchip ID and automatically unlock or lock the flap depending on how it is programmed.

A microchip cat flap allows your cat to go out but not come back in, go in and out, and can even be set to prevent your cat from going out again once inside. It can be installed in a wall, door or window. All your cat has to do is go through the flap once for it to register the microchip identification number.

There are various ways a microchip cat flap can be used, such as only allowing your cat out but not in, or enabling your cat to come in but not go out again. All your cat has to do is enter the flap for the first time and the identification number will be read and stored by the device. After reading the number, the device will automatically unlatch the flap.

Microchip cat flaps have many more options than a regular cat flap, and can be installed in a door, window or wall. In many cases, you can even use the same hole that was created for a standard cat flap. You can also program the device with several different microchip ID numbers, which can be useful if you have more than one cat.

When deciding what type of cat flap to purchase, some pet owners may first consider a magnetic cat flap. One major difference between a magnetic cat flap and microchip cat flap is that with a magnetic flap, a cat will need to wear a collar or tag to active flap. No collar or tag is needed with a microchip cat flap because the chip that the device reads is already implanted underneath the cat?s skin.

SureFlap is a microchip cat flap developed by a physicist in the U.K. It is an extremely popular product that has won many awards. Like regular cat flaps, it can be installed in a door, window or wall. It will also usually fit in holes left be regular cat flaps.

SureFlap is a microchip cat flap that operates on batteries and can be installed in walls and windows, as well as doors. It is a very sturdy product that will allow your own cat to come in the house or go outside, but not other animals. The product comes with thorough installation instructions.

There are many advantages to a microchip cat flap compared to other types of flaps, especially if you work or are busy during the day or evening hours. Both you and your can will enjoy more freedom after a microchip cat flap has been installed.

Cataracts in Dogs

By Cathy Doggins

Most people are familiar with cataracts, as most of us know a few people who is afflicted with them. Cataracts are an exceedingly common degenerative eye disease in humans, and they're an ordinary dog eye issue as well. It is vital for dog owners to be acquainted with the outward appearance of cataracts in dogs in addition to the common risk factors for their development and treatment in the event that they do appear.

The dog's eye is a highly complex organ composed of a number of smaller structures within the eye. One such structure is the lens, the see-through apparatus in the center of the eye that serves to focus and direct light onto the retina. For the lens to function as intended it must remain transparent. A cataract forms when the lens becomes clouded, causing a lack of light coming into contact with the retina and a subsequent gradual loss of vision.

Cataracts can form for several reasons. Some are congenital, which means that the dog is born with them. Primary congenital cataracts occur in the miniature schnauzer rarely, but any breed can have congenital cataracts secondary to certain diseases in utero. Nonetheless, the majority of cataracts form later on in life, either because of genetics (hereditary) or as a consequence of diabetes mellitus.

Cataract development is believed to be genetic in many breeds, like the English cocker spaniel, Cavalier King Charles spaniel, Alaskan malamute, Siberian husky, and many other breeds. For these breeds, frequent eye examinations by a qualified veterinarian are particularly crucial as the dog gets older. Many owners mistakenly assume that a clouded appearance to the dog's eye indicates a cataract. In reality, most every dog will develop a cloudy lens as he or she ages, which is simply a normal sign of advanced age and doesn't cause loss of vision. This condition is referred to as nuclear sclerosis and is extremely common. To distinguish between a cataract and nuclear sclerosis, the veterinarian will utilize an instrument known as an ophthalmoscope to cast light into the eye. If the light passes through the lens to the retina, there is not a cataract. If the light is obscured and does not reach the retina, the dog has a cataract..

The most commonly seen types of cataracts in dogs are those developed as a consequence of diabetes mellitus. Diabetes is a disorder of blood sugar regulation, and in dogs with diabetes the unusually high blood sugar can cause excess sugar buildup in the eye, which causes the lens to swell and the lens fibers to rip apart. This results in the development of a cataract. Most dogs with diabetes will someday form cataracts whether or not the diabetes is suitably treated, but maintaining regular blood sugar levels will assist in delaying the onset. If your dog is a breed that is susceptible to developing diabetes, such as a miniature schnauzer, it is extremely essential for you to listen to your veterinarian's advice for screening and to be watchful for the evidence of diabetes: drinking more, urinating more, and shedding weight.

If your dog has developed cataracts, treatment is available, although it might not be applicable to every unique. If there is just one eye afflicted, most vets won't endorse treatment, as the dog should be able to compensate with its other eye. If both eyes are afflicted and the dog is effectively blind, the sole treatment is an operation known as phacoemulsification, where a tiny instrument is inserted into the lens and removes the damaged lens fibers. This operation is only carried out by veterinary ophthalmologists and is typically very successful for the right kind of patient. If your dog has been diagnosed as having cataracts and you are interested in surgical treatment, you should contact a veterinary ophthalmologistâ€"they can normally be found at veterinary teaching hospitals and specialty or referral veterinary centers.

Holistic Dog Food Diet

By Jamie Lansley

Choosing a holistic dog food diet will give your furry companion a healthier body, a longer life and more feel good energy. Healthier food can have a dramatic effect on everything from the hair on your dog's rump to her teeth and internal organs.

Before canned wet food and kibble was mass marketed in the 1930s, pets everywhere were fed raw meat, kitchen scraps and leftover human food. While not as convenient, this pre-kibble diet was more beneficial to animals than the overly processed foods for sale today.

Mainstream dog food is mass produced and contains an astonishing amount of filler ingredients that hold no nutritional value, food coloring and preservatives. This means your dog will have attractive and long lasting food but won't be getting necessary nutrients. Fiber is important to all mammal digestion. If your dog eats only kibble and wet food, he will be ingesting little to no fiber. This is one of the reasons most pet dogs suffer from digestive and bowel discomfort.

There is more to a holistic dog food diet than simple fresh meat however. Dogs are able to derive great benefits from eating organs and fat and chewing on raw bones. Fruits and vegetables are surprisingly important to a healthy dog diet as well. All of these ingredients would be present in wild canine's natural diet.

Holistic dog diets are based on the evolutionary truths regarding how a canine body is meant to function. You can give your pet the gift of healthy, comfortable skin, bowels, teeth, ears and more. By simply eliminating ingredients most incongruous with a dog's intended diet, you can help your pet live a happier life.

By feeding your dog what he would have eaten if he were part of a wild dog pack thousands of years ago, you're making room for your pet's needs in your own life. What better way to say thank you for the companionship, comfort and loyalty?

What holistic means to you will likely be different than what it means to another pet owner, even if you have the same breed of dog! You should make your decision based on the time, money and energy you have to invest in the switch but also on your pet?s specific needs and preferences. Visiting your vet can also help you decide on the best diet for your dog.

To give your dog a longer life full of happy, healthy memories, switching to a holistic dog food diet is essential. Imagine your pet with shinier fur, itch free skin and improved tooth and gum health plus an efficient and comfortable digestive system. That?s something to wag about.

Clicker training; help your dog to learn by encouragement and reinforcement of natural behaviours.

By Michael Volk

Clicker training is an inventive training strategy to teach an animal a particular behaviour on command by utilizing positive reinforcement.

Originally the basic idea behind behaviour reinforcement in animals was developed by dolphin trainers. A whistle sound was employed to pinpoint a particular behaviour after training the animals mind to expect a fish when it hears a whistle

Dogs, cats, horses and even chickens can reply well to this kind of training. The clicker is generally employed in dog training circles. Clicker training is additionally used to train help dogs and is beginning to become more prevalent in pet training classes.

At first the dog must be tuned in to the clicker. This is done by carrying out a few sessions of associating the click sound with a treat. Only a small treat each time or the dog will spend the entire clicker training session eating his rewards. Tuning in is easy. Always give a treat to your dog if the click sound is released. Never click without treating your dog. Your eventual aim is to ensure that when you use the click to identify a specific behaviour the dog will automatically associate the behaviour with a treat.

To affirm that your dog is tuned into the sound wait till you do not have his attention then press the clicker. If he looks straight to you for a treat then he's making the organisation.

When the association is created it has to be maintained regularly to remain effective. The most vital clicker training rule is to never click without reward. If you do click even by mistake the dog must get his treat.

During clicker training sessions when the sound is established in your dogs mind you can begin to pinpoint the behaviour that you want him to copy. Canine communication 101

By James McCornak

It astonishes me that we can live in step with a totally different species and know what they need and want. The human that has a mutual and respectful relationship with their dog is privileged. Dogs and people work in direct partnership in numerous roles that change between assistance dogs for disabled folks right thru to competitive obedience training.

Communication with a new and unfamiliar dog will take a bit to polish and sometimes it feels like you'll never get to a point of harmony. Those among us that have lived with a dog for several years will say that they know what their canine buddy needs from one gigantic brown eyed stare.

It takes observation and thought alongside basic understanding of common dog behaviours to be in a position to connect to your dog efficiently. It is not overly complicated yet many of us battle with communication to the point of despair. Owners of misunderstood dogs attend obedience training and ask for guidance from behaviourists regularly.

For example if an untrained dog craves attention he can make efforts to claim this attention by jumping up at his human. If the human pushes him off and shouts angrily at the dog to "get down" the dog has managed to get his reward in the shape of attention. Voice and physical contact are rewarding. The dog may not like the tone of voice but if he is craving reassurance, any attention is more rewarding than none.

Put yourself in the dog's head for a minute. You and he are sat together noiselessly at home when there's a change in the environment; perhaps someone has knocked the door. He feels worried and insecure and needs some reassurance. He may feel upset. The dog is anxious and has a decision to make. He jumps up and gets touched and spoken to. He keeps away and gets ignored in the time he must feel safe the most.

If this behaviour is repeated enough the human will have accidentally trained the dog to jump up. This kind of interaction will train into the dog a particular reaction, as categorical as formal obedience training will teach any behaviour. The dog does not know the difference.

Each dog has different experiences and wishes. To communicate well with our dogs we must put ourselves in their paws. Stress. Attempt to work out why they're behaving in a certain way. Choose whether we have accidentally taught them this unhelpful habit and work out how we can reward them for doing something a touch more handy to us instead.

If you want additional help to talk with your dog or mend certain unhelpful behaviours it could be worth looking for a local reward based obedience training class, and look for a credible dog training instructor.
