What You Must Know If You Want to Travel with Your Dog

By Dirk Gruenberg

Anyone who has ever traveled with a dog knows that there are many things one needs to think of. The health and safety of the dog is paramount, but his crate and his identification are very important, too.

Wherever your travel plans may lead you, please always make the health and safety of your dog the priority. With that being said, see a vet before going on a long trip, so that there can be one final check-up before take-off.

The check-up will ensure you that your dog is healthy and ready to go - with all the necessary vaccines as well. After all, that is very important, so don't miss that part.

Moreover, your dog is likely to stay much happier and healthier if you take along some of his regular food. That way, when you feed him, he will not experience a big change but he will have something he is already used to.

Additionally, taking some water with you or buying bottled water is a good idea. Also, it goes without saying, if your dog needs any kind of medication, make sure to bring that along, too.

Another thing to consider is the crate that your dog will be traveling in. Make sure that it is of good size for your dog:

It is important that he can in it as well as lie down - comfortably so. It should also have enough ventilation and a leak-proof bottom is a must.

And there is yet more to think about: your dog's identification. It would be any dog owner's worst nightmare to lose their dog on a trip. In this very unlikely event, you will be glad to have followed the following advice:

Of course, you can go the microchip route. If that is not for you, make sure to, at the very least, have your dog's name and your contact information on your dog's identification tag that is in his collar. If there is situation, you will be glad you did.
