Holistic Flea Treatment Approach

By Frederick Davies

The holistic approach to flea treatment is a natural one, in which the main focus is on your pet, rather than on the fleas. So instead of focusing on just trying to get rid of fleas when they come around, instead you take a proactive approach to try to keep your pet in the best condition so that you can avoid them in the first place.

Keep Your Pet Healthy

The way that holistic flea treatment works is that you keep your pet healthy as a way of making sure that they do not get lots of flea infestations. It has been demonstrated that the healthier an animal is, the less problems they will have with things like fleas. Just as healthier humans tend to get less illnesses.

So what does it take to keep your pet healthy? Well, there are lots of approaches of course, and what is going to be best for your pet is going to come down to a number of different factors. It is best to consult with your vet about that, they will be able to tell you the best way to keep your pet healthy.

Just as nutrition for humans and healthy living has lots of details associated with it though, everyone knows basically what it takes. Which is that you have to eat the right foods, make sure that you get enough exercise, and that you are living in healthy conditions at home. That is exactly what your pets need as well.

Fleas do not just seek out unhealthy animals though, the way they are spread is through proximity. So if your pet, however healthy it may be, comes into contact with another dog or cat which has fleas, they will probably get the infestation. That's why they can't be cut out altogether.

Getting Rid of Fleas

With an holistic approach, it is not just the fleas that you have to think about when trying to get rid of them, it is your pet. Of course just keeping your pet healthy is not going to get rid of them, but it will still help in making the treatment more effective.

The approach that many people take when dealing with fleas is to just try to get rid of them as quickly as possible. The way they do that is with chemicals, which although fast acting can also harm the pet. Taking the holistic approach though, that is not the appropriate thing to do.

The problem with chemical treatments is that they can also harm your pet. Negative side effects can include things like skin irritation, hair loss, their nervous system might even be affected with some treatments. With the holistic approach though natural flea treatments are used instead.

For cats, the best natural flea treatment is to use a flea comb. This is time consuming as it is best to do it once a day, but it's also effective. You just have to remember to dunk the comb in some soapy water each time so that the fleas cannot just jump back on to your pet.

If you have a dog though you will also have the option of giving it a flea bath. There's no need to get any kind of special shampoo, a normal dog shampoo will be fine. The idea is that the lather will kill all of the fleas, so this is an effective way of getting rid of them as well.

There are plenty of effective flea treatments then, it is just a matter of choosing the right ones for your pet. You also have to consider that you are going to have to clean the environment in which your pet lives as well though, which you can get more advice on from pest control experts.
